What Season Am I? Seasonal Colour Analysis Explained

Have you ever put on a top that you loved in the shop, only to get home and find it makes you look washed out or tired? Or maybe you’ve noticed that certain colours make people say “you look amazing today” while others seem to do nothing for you at all. The answer usually has very little to do with the garment itself and everything to do with whether the colour is working with your natural colouring or against it.

That’s where seasonal colour analysis comes in.

What Is Seasonal Colour Analysis?

Seasonal colour analysis is a method of identifying which colours flatter your skin tone, hair, and eyes most naturally. The idea dates back to the early 20th century but was popularised in the 1980s by colour consultant Carole Jackson in her book Colour Me Beautiful. The system groups people into four seasonal categories: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Each season corresponds to a palette of colours that tend to harmonise with the natural tones found in that group.

It sounds simple, but the impact it can have on how you look and feel in your clothes is really quite remarkable.

Why Does Your Season Matter?

When the colours you wear sit close to your face, they interact directly with your skin, eyes, and hair. The right colours will make your eyes sparkle, your skin look clear and healthy, and your whole face appear more alive. The wrong ones can create shadows, enhance redness, or make you look tired even when you’re not.

Once you know your season, shopping becomes so much easier. Instead of buying by trend or because something looks lovely on the hanger, you buy knowing the colours will genuinely work for you. Over time, this builds a wardrobe where almost everything you own suits you and works together.

The Four Seasons Explained

Spring

Spring types tend to have warm, golden undertones in their skin. Hair is usually light to medium brown, golden blonde, auburn, or strawberry blonde, and eyes are often clear blues, greens, aquas, or warm browns. Spring palettes feature fresh, warm, and light colours: think peach, coral, warm ivory, camel, golden yellow, and soft greens. Springs generally look their best avoiding anything too dark or icy, which can overwhelm their naturally fresh, light appearance.

Summer

Summer types have cool undertones, usually with a softness to their colouring overall. Skin can be fair to medium with a pink, beige, or rosy tone, and hair tends to be ash blonde, ash brown, or cool-toned. Eyes are often blue, grey, grey-green, or soft brown. The Summer palette is cool, muted, and elegant: think dusty rose, lavender, soft blue, muted teal, and gentle grey. Bright or earthy colours can overwhelm a Summer, but soft, smoky shades are absolutely beautiful on them.

Autumn

Autumn types have warm, earthy undertones and tend to have the richest, most grounded colouring. Hair is often auburn, copper, warm brown, or dark chocolate. Eyes are typically hazel, amber, warm green, or dark brown. The Autumn palette draws from nature’s harvest: think rust, olive, burnt orange, mustard, warm terracotta, and deep chocolate brown. Cool or icy colours tend to drain Autumns, while earthy warmth makes them truly glow.

Winter

Winter types have cool undertones with high contrast between skin, hair, and eyes. Skin can be very fair with a cool or olive tone, hair tends to be dark brown or black, and eyes are typically dark brown, grey, or striking blue. The Winter palette is bold and clear: think true red, cobalt blue, emerald green, pure white, and stark black. Winters are the only season who truly suit pure black and bright white worn close to the face, and they look spectacular in jewel tones.

What Happens in a Colour Analysis Session?

In a professional session, you’ll sit in good natural light (or daylight-balanced light) with your hair back and your makeup removed or minimal. Your analyst will drape various coloured fabrics around your shoulders and observe how each one affects your face. There is no guesswork involved. The right colours will visibly lift your complexion, and the wrong ones will create shadows, redness, or a flat, tired appearance.

My sessions also include a short temperament test, which adds a fascinating extra layer to the process. The four seasons have long been connected to the four classical temperaments: Spring to Sanguine, Summer to Phlegmatic, Autumn to Choleric, and Winter to Melancholic. Each temperament carries its own personality traits, energy, and natural tendencies, and these often mirror the qualities of their corresponding colour season beautifully. It can be a wonderfully affirming moment when your colours and your temperament point to exactly the same season.

By the end of the session you’ll receive your personal colour palette, along with guidance on how to use it for clothing, makeup, and accessories. Many of my clients tell me it is one of the most genuinely useful things they’ve ever done for their wardrobe.
